It’s felt-astic: Learn how to glue felt

Artificial Content Title -- to be hidden

Does your next arts and crafts project involve learning how to glue felt? This guide will take you through how to select the right adhesive – and how to use it – in a few simple steps.

The best way to glue felt starts with the right adhesive

Felt is a popular fabric commonly used in arts and crafts projects for children and adults alike. But did you know felt has a variety of other uses? For instance, felt can also be used to provide a lining for card game tables and other cool accessories.

But before you reach for your standard super glue when gluing felt together, it’s important to know super glues aren’t a great fit. They tend to bleed through the fabric, leaving your felt item feeling stiff and with unsightly glue stains. The best adhesives for gluing felt together tend to be specialised fabric glues.

How to glue felt together using fabric glue

Fabric glue is best suited to crafting projects that involve gluing smaller areas and surfaces. This multi-functional adhesive provides a clear, flexible, and waterproof bond which moves with the fabric and bonds to a variety of materials. It is an ideal choice for arts and crafts involving felt, as well as more sophisticated projects like making fashion accessories, mobile phone cases, slippers and even bags!

Ready for attaching felt to felt? Here’s what you need to do:

Wet bonding method

  1. Establish a well-ventilated work area for gluing felt together and put on protective gloves.
  2. Ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.
  3. Open the adhesive product by piercing the seal with the reverse side of the cap.
  4. Apply a thin, even amount of adhesive to both surfaces. Gently press together, making sure to wipe away any excess glue before the adhesive has time to set.
  5. Hold the pieces of felt together until the bond has cured.

Contact bonding method

  1. Establish a well-ventilated work area for gluing felt together and put on protective gloves.
  2. Ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.
  3. Open the adhesive product by piercing the seal with the reverse side of the cap
  4. Apply a thin, even amount of adhesive to both surfaces to be bonded and let them dry to the touch (this should take 10-30 minutes). When working with more porous materials, try applying a second coat for added strength.
  5. Once dry to the touch, firmly hold the pieces of felt together until the bond has set.
