Want to know how to install glue-down vinyl plank flooring? You’re in the right place. We cover everything you need to know to upgrade any room.

The facts about gluing down vinyl flooring

Installing glue-down vinyl plank flooring is one of the easiest ways to upgrade a room. It’s very durable, easy to clean, and more affordable than many other options. It’s also a great project for the DIYer! With just basic skills and some simple instructions, you’ll be on your way to a brand-new floor.

You will want to be clear on a few things in the planning stage. First, you may be wondering if you have to glue down vinyl flooring. Some types of vinyl flooring are not glued down. This style is sometimes called a floating floor. Other types of flooring must be glued down. Make sure you read the directions and understand the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Gluing down vinyl flooring holds the planks in place and prevents adjacent planks from uncoupling and creating a gap. This sometimes occurs with floating floors.

Adhesive choice is also essential. Choose a flooring adhesive that is compatible with vinyl plank flooring. Acrylic-based glues are easiest to work with and tend to have less of an odour than other types of flooring adhesives.

Prep work before you glue down vinyl flooring

Good preparation makes for a successful job. Follow these steps before beginning your installation.

    1. Ensure your subfloor is clean, dry, and smooth. Patch any large gaps or holes.
    2. Your new vinyl planks should also be clean and dry. Keep them in the room they will be installed in overnight to adjust to the temperature and humidity level of the area.
    3. Remove baseboards and other trim, if possible, as this will make installation easier.
    4. Lay out the room. Chalk a centre line in the room and place a row or two of the planks along the line. Measure from the line to the wall and adjust your starting row width if necessary to avoid ending with a very thin plank at the far end of the room.
    5. Chalk a second line at a 90° angle to the first one. Consider plank lengths and adjust the line to avoid ending with a very short plank.

Also, gather all your tools and supplies ahead of time:

    • tape measure
    • pencil
    • chalk line
    • saw
    • utility knife
    • adhesive trowel with proper-sized notches
    • planks and adhesive
    • hard rubber roller
    • gloves and knee pads
    • mineral spirits and towels

How to install glue-down vinyl plank flooring—A step-by-step guide

    1. Determine how much of the floor to glue in one go. Consider the adhesive working time and plan out where you will be able to stand without getting into the glue.
    2. Start at the centre lines and apply adhesive to an area that you can complete before the glue sets.
    3. Hold the trowel at a 45° angle and apply the adhesive evenly across the area. Allow drying time before installing the planks if directed to do so on the adhesive label.
    4. Install the vinyl planks starting at the centre of the room, where your lines intersect. Lay the planks tightly together and stagger board lengths randomly.
    5. Press down each plank as you install it to ensure adhesion. Use a floor roller to press out any air pockets.
    6. Wipe away any excess adhesive using a towel dampened with mineral spirits.
    7. Repeat the above process until the floor is complete. Cut planks to length as needed.
    8. When all the planks are down, roll the entire floor again in multiple directions to ensure a tight bond.
