We have the details to share with you on how to glue rocks together in many different applications. Let your creativity loose in the yard, a fountain, or an aquarium.
The best adhesive for gluing rocks together will depend on the size of rocks and the conditions surrounding the display. For instance, an underwater application may call for a different type of adhesive than one that will never encounter moisture.
With that being said, the two most common glues used to glue rocks together are super glue and epoxy. We will consider the advantages of each of these adhesives in various applications and give you clear instructions on how to use them.
You will need an exterior-rated adhesive for landscaping applications, since the rocks will be exposed to sun, rain, and temperature extremes. For larger projects, you may want to go with an exterior grade construction adhesive. Make sure the labeling includes stone among the materials it will bond to.
Here is a handy checklist of items you may need for the project:
- plastic table cover for your work surface
- adhesive
- fine grit sandpaper
- pencil or marker
- a bucket of water and clean cloths
When you're ready to begin work, here are some general guidelines to follow:
- Wash the rocks and dry them so the glue bonds properly.
- Test fit the rocks. Assemble them in the arrangement you want and take note of the areas of the stones to glue. You may want to use a pencil or marker to mark the spots where the rocks will be glued.
- Sand the surfaces that will receive adhesive, then wipe the area clean. This will improve the bond.
- Apply the glue to the marked areas and put the rocks in place. Ensure the adhesive makes significant contact with both surfaces. Immediately wipe away any excess adhesive using the solvent recommended by the manufacturer.
- Let the adhesive cure as recommended on the label.
For smaller projects, Loctite All Purpose Extreme Gel will do nicely. Extreme glue is fast drying and forms an exceptionally strong bond to rocks, stone, textiles, glass, and more. It can be used indoors or out, is highly water resistant, and dries clear.
If your project requires bonding surfaces that do not fit together tightly, you may want to consider epoxy. Epoxy is a two-part adhesive, consisting of a resin and a hardener. Once mixed the epoxy will cure into an extremely durable adhesive. One advantage of epoxy is that it can span wider gaps without breaking or losing grip.
Loctite offers a very quick curing, easy to dispense solution for such cases. Loctite Universal Instant Epoxy Liquid 5 Minute. This product is so easy to use because the resin and hardener are mixed in the dual syringe dispenser. The epoxy can be applied directly to where it’s needed, without further mixing.
Instant Epoxy sets to a clear finish and bonds firmly to metals, wood, glass, ceramics, and stone. You’ll complete your project in no time since this formula begins to harden in just 5 minutes.
Have a floral arrangement or planter you want to decorate? Super glue is a quick and easy method of joining smaller rocks and other decorations and keeping them firmly in place. Follow the general instructions above for this application as well, although marking smaller rocks and pebbles may not be necessary.
You’ll appreciate Loctite Super Glue Power Gel for these precision bonds. Power Gel is one of the strongest super glues available, and the dispenser is designed for accurate placement. The long nozzle and easy-grip squeeze bottle make no-drip application easy.
Super Glue Power Gel is also well suited for planters and floral arrangements because it retains some flexibility thanks to the rubber-infused formula. That means better holding power in spite of movement, shock, and vibration. It is weather-resistant for outdoor applications.
For rocks and other objects that will be permanently submerged in water, your best bet is an aquascaping glue. These adhesives are designed for constant contact with water and the conditions common in fish tanks, ponds, and fountains.
For small applications and repairs, you’ll love Loctite Super Glue XXL. This formula is solvent-free and highly water resistant. It also comes in a precision dispenser and dries to a nearly invisible clear.
