How to glue cardboard together: Spray adhesives and more

Learn how to glue cardboard together quickly and permanently. Spray adhesives and super glue are the two go-to products – find out why below.

Gluing cardboard together: The basics

Gluing cardboard together sounds easy enough. But choose the wrong glue and the results will disappoint. In this article, we’ll discuss the two best methods of attaching cardboard together: spray adhesive and super glue.

Spray adhesive works very well for gluing cardboard together. You can cover large areas quickly and evenly and get a strong bond. Another advantage is that spray adhesive won’t bleed through the cardboard or cause it to wrinkle or curl, as some liquid glues may do. It also dries clear, so you won’t need to worry about it showing if you use it for crafting or decorations.

For smaller tasks and repairs, super glue is the adhesive for the job. It is extremely strong for the amount required, dries clear, and will adhere to almost any surface. The quick drying and convenience of super glue is hard to beat.

How to glue cardboard together: Simple instructions

By now, you have probably settled on which glue is right for your project. Let’s briefly go over the step-by-step instructions for each type.

In both cases, set up in a well-ventilated area and cover anything that should not come into contact with spilled glue. Also, wear safety gear such as nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Gluing cardboard together with spray adhesive

  1. Pre-fit the materials before applying glue.
  2. Shake the spray can 10–12 times and turn the nozzle toward the black dot.
  3. Spray an even coat of adhesive on one or both surfaces (see manufacturer’s directions). Hold the can vertically and about 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) from the surface.
  4. Allow time for the glue to get tacky.
  5. Join the pieces together, ensuring proper alignment, and press firmly. Reposition immediately if necessary.
  6. Clean the nozzle by turning the can upside down and spraying for 2 seconds, then wipe with mineral spirits and replace the cap.

Gluing cardboard together with super glue

  1. Pre-fit the materials before opening the glue container.
  2. Apply a drop or two of super glue on one surface.
  3. Press the items together immediately and hold for 15–30 seconds.
  4. Replace the cap on the glue and clean up drips or runs with a cloth or paper towel and acetone.

If you get some super glue on your fingers, don’t panic. Here’s what to do:

  1. Dab the area with acetone (nail polish remover) and allow it to soften the glue.
  2. Take a dull object, like the back edge of a butter knife, and slowly work it between the fused fingers.
  3. Very gently pry a little at a time until your fingers come apart.
  4. Wipe away the residue with more acetone, then wash with warm soapy water.
