How to glue fabric to wood: Basic considerations

Gluing fabric to wood is a relatively simple project, but there are a few things to consider before getting started. 

First, check that the glue will not seep through the fabric. Otherwise, you will have to deal with stains or discolouration. Also, make sure the material doesn’t wrinkle, crease, or forms bubbles when applied to the wood surface. 

Spray adhesives avoid these issues quite well. They cover large areas quickly and evenly, will not seep through or stain the fabric and won’t cause wrinkles. Many spray adhesives allow you to reposition the fabric for several minutes before setting.

The best way to glue fabric to wood

Attaching fabric to wood requires few tools and is quite easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Set up in a well-ventilated area. Cover any surfaces that should not come into contact with the adhesive.
  2. Make sure all surfaces are clean, dry, and dust free. 
  3. Shake the can of spray adhesive a dozen times or so.
  4. Apply a light, even coat of adhesive on the wood surface. Hold the can vertically about 8–10 inches from the surface.
  5. Allow a few minutes for the glue to get tacky. Apply a second coat for stronger adhesion. Check the directions on the can for specifics.
  6. Attach the fabric to the wood and smooth it out. 
  7. Reposition the fabric if needed by lifting it from one corner. 
  8. Clean up by turning the can upside down and spraying for 2 seconds to clear the nozzle. Then wipe it with mineral spirits and replace the cap.
  9. Cut away any excess fabric once the glue is dry.

When attaching fabric to wood furniture or lining a surface, cut your material a little larger than what is needed. Once the adhesive has dried, you can easily trim away the excess.

Best adhesives for gluing fabric to wood

Choose a good-quality spray adhesive for larger jobs. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions. It’s best to test the glue on a small piece of the material to ensure compatibility.
